What a severe storm does to a parked car

In a severe storm, wind does the throwing, and rain, grit and hail land on whatever is parked outside.

  • A sedan under a silver cover, seen from directly behind on a wet road in high wind, its hem drawn in under the bumper, leaves blowing past and roadside trees bent by the gusts

    Straight-line wind

Wind damage is half of all severe storm reports. Elastic hems hold the cover snug, and a Gust Strap clips to its lower edge.

  • A silver-covered car seen from behind on wet tarmac, rain falling and sun breaking through storm cloud

    Rain and blown grit

Gusts drive rain and grit at the paint. The coated silver shell sheds rain, and grit lands on the cover, not your clear coat.

  • A covered classic car parked inside a garage, the roll-up door open on a rain-wet floor

    Wind-driven hail

Blown sideways, hail can break a car's side windows. When a severe thunderstorm watch is issued, get the car under a roof.

Elastic front and rear hems hold it snug and the polyurethane-coated shell sheds rain. For high wind, add a Gust Strap, sold separately: it clips to the lower edge and its cords run under the car.

Will a car cover protect my car from hail?

Not on its own. For hail itself, see our sister brand HailProtector, and park under a roof during a severe thunderstorm watch. A fitted cover handles the wind, rain and grit that come with the storm.

Which cover is best for storm season?

For the wind, rain and grit a storm brings, the AllGuard Platinum Shield. Its silver 300D polyester shell (D is denier, a measure of yarn weight) has a polyurethane coating that sheds rain, plus a UV treatment. The fabric is breathable, and a fleece liner sits against the paint. It is matched to your exact year, make and model, with elastic front and rear hems.

How do I keep a cover on in high wind?

Start with the elastic front and rear hems pulled in snug. In high wind, add a Gust Strap: it clips to the cover's lower edge and its cords run under the car, not through the grommets. The side grommets take a cable lock. Thunderstorm gusts can reach 100 mph, so when a severe storm is on the way, a garage is the better place for the car.

Can I cover the car right after a storm?

Let the car dry first: a cover should go on a dry vehicle. Once it is covered, the AllGuard Platinum Shield sheds the next storm's rain, and its breathable fabric lets trapped moisture escape. If the cover comes off wet, let it air-dry before you fold it away.
