Arizona State and UC San Diego measured dashboards at 157°F after an hour of full sun; a cover keeps that sun off the paint and glass.

Sunlight starts the damage and heat speeds it up, and a car parked outside takes both from morning to dusk.

On 100°F Arizona days, steering wheels averaged 127°F and seats 123°F after an hour in sun. A cover keeps sun off the glass.

Clear coat carries UV absorbers that guard the color beneath, and exposure wears them down. Under a cover, the paint sits in shade.

Phoenix logged 70 days at 110°F or hotter in 2024. Heat speeds up the damage sunlight starts, and the cover keeps that sun off.

Yes. Clear coat carries UV absorbers that protect the color coat, and exposure to the elements wears them down. Sunlight starts the damage and heat speeds up the chemical reactions that follow. Paint makers test coatings in both Arizona, for its sun and heat, and South Florida, where the added moisture is typically even harder on paint.
The side glass lets through far more of it than the windshield. A 2016 JAMA Ophthalmology study of 29 cars found windshields stopped 96% of UVA on average, but side windows only 71%, and one as little as 44%. A full cover puts fabric over every window.
For a car parked outside in strong sun, we recommend the AllGuard Weatherproof Max: a UV treatment coating with a microporous film over a soft fleece liner. If it sits out in desert sun all year, step up to the AllGuard Platinum Shield. It has a silver 300D polyester shell (D is denier, a measure of yarn weight) that is breathable.
We don't publish a temperature figure for our covers, and we won't guess at one. What a cover does is keep direct sun off the paint, the glass and the dashboard, the surfaces the sun works on all day.
Every cover is made for a year, make and model, so the finder is the fastest way to the right one.
