The rain stops. The damp stays.

One paint test lab found that how long paint stays wet, overnight dew included, matters more than how much rain falls.

  • Rain running off a silver car cover in rivulets, water beaded across the fabric and over a stitched seam

    Steady rain

Water can leach protective additives out of a paint coating, a test lab warns. The cover sheds the rain and lets it run off.

  • Dew drops beaded on a silver car cover in low morning sun

    Overnight dew

Paint that cools below the dew point gets wet overnight, rain or not. On a covered car, the dew settles on the cover first.

  • Water beading on the woven silver fabric of a car cover

    Trapped damp

For stored cars, the National Park Service advises a breathable cover that resists water. The AllGuard Platinum Shield has breathable fabric for that.

Can rain really damage car paint?

It can. A paint test lab says water can leach protective additives out of a coating. The EPA says acid deposition makes paint deteriorate more quickly. Acid rain has eased a lot: US wet sulfate deposition, a common indicator of it, fell more than 70% from around 1990 to the early 2020s. The same lab says how long paint stays wet, overnight dew included, matters more than how much rain falls.

Will rain soak through the cover?

The AllGuard Platinum Shield has a polyurethane-coated shell that sheds rain, but our covers are weather-resistant, not built to seal out water entirely: in a long, hard downpour, some water can work through any fabric cover. If the cover comes off wet, let it air-dry before you fold it, and put it back on a clean, dry car.

Why not just throw a plastic tarp over it?

A plastic tarp does not breathe. For vehicles in storage, the National Park Service advises a cover that is breathable and resists water. The AllGuard Platinum Shield is built that way: a polyurethane-coated silver 300D polyester shell (D is denier, a measure of yarn weight) that sheds rain, with breathable fabric. Elastic front and rear hems hold it snug, so gusts are less likely to push rain underneath.

I park near the ocean. What does salt air do to a car?

Sea salt settles most heavily near the shore and thins out as you move inland. Once humidity passes 75%, salt on a surface turns into a very corrosive solution. Rinse the salt off, then cover a clean, dry car. For coastal parking we match the AllGuard Platinum Shield.
